Chesapeake Bay Reserve, Maryland
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers plan an active and important role in the Maryland Reserve and its components. Their contributions range from field monitoring to staffing of visitor centers. In 2002 volunteers donated over 10,000 hours to these programs.
Examples of Volunteer Activities:
Fish Population Surveys: Participants conduct monthly fish population surveys in which fish are collected, measured, identified and released. The information collected is used by the Department of Natural Resources to develop an index of biological integrity for tidal waters.
Herp Searches and Amphibian Calling Surveys: Scouts, home schools and others search for reptiles and amphibian populations. Information gathered helps to establish baseline data on species health, diversity and population statistics.
