The pencil tree, or milkbush,
is native to Africa. It has multiple trunks that support an abundance
of pencil-thin succulent green branches. The leaves are extremely
small and shed quickly. The true flowers, which are centered within
a group of petal-like bracts, are inconspicuous. The pencil tree requires
very little water but a great deal of sunlight. When any part of the
pencil tree is cut, it oozes a white sap that can cause dermatitis.
Placing a crushed branch in a river will stupefy fish. |
