Hudson River Reserve, New York
Facilities
The reserve is headquartered at Bard College Field Station, located adjacent to Tivoli South Bay. The field station includes laboratories, offices, a library, specimen collections and field gear. The reserve’s resource library includes a marine and estuarine education collection, a
coastal management collection and a science and research collection.
Access by hiking and canoeing varies at each site. There are seasonal car-top boat launches at Tivoli North Bay and Stockport Flats. At Piermont Marsh a mile-long pedestrian pier extends into the Hudson.
Interpretive exhibits are located at the Tivoli Bays Visitor Center and at the Trailside Museum and Zoo near Iona Island in Bear Mountain State Park and at the Coxsackie Boat Launch on the western shore of the Hudson opposite Stockport Flats. Informational kiosks are located at Piermont Marsh, Stockport Flats and Tivoli Bays.
Nutten Hook at Stockport features the remains of the largest icehouse on the Hudson, which is listed on the National and New York State Registers of Historic Places. Interpretive panels relate the history of the ice harvesting industry.
Two motorboats and a fleet of canoes are used for both research and education.
All four of the reserve’s component sites serve as field laboratories for research and education programs. For further information about resources available to visiting scientists, graduate fellowship opportunities, educational programs or public access, contact the reserve office at 845-758-7010.
