NERRS Real-Time Data Capabilities

The reserve system, as part of its System-Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP, pronounced "swamp") is currently sending real-time water quality and weather data from 26 reserves water quality telemetry equipment at CBNERR-VAthrough the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) operated by the National Environmental Satellite, Information, and Data Services (NESDIS) Division of NOAA.

NERRS real-time data will be used for many purposes, including scientific research, educating students and the public about what’s happening in their coastal areas, and helping coastal decision-makers manage their coastlines. These data will, for example:

  • help habitat engineers design better restoration projects
  • help managers understand storm surge and flood risks in coastal areas
  • help the public understand how sea level rise will affect their coasts
