NERRS Real-Time Data Capabilities
The reserve system, as part of its System-Wide Monitoring
Program (SWMP, pronounced "swamp") is currently
sending real-time water quality and weather data from
26 reserves

through the
Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) operated by the
National Environmental Satellite, Information, and
Data Services (NESDIS) Division of NOAA.
NERRS real-time data will be used for many purposes, including scientific research, educating students and the public about what’s happening in their coastal areas, and helping coastal decision-makers manage their coastlines. These data will, for example:
- help habitat engineers design better restoration projects
- help managers understand storm surge and flood risks in coastal areas
- help the public understand how sea level rise will affect their coasts
